i Got a new dress

I got a new dress examines the internal choice between embodiment and performance through personal style. As BARI stands before her reflection trying on a new dress, she traces a subtle shift between looking at herself and feeling herself. In moments of self-observation, identity appears contingent on image, as though the dress might reveal, complete, or transform the self. Yet the more intensely she searches for herself through appearance, the more elusive she becomes. When attention returns to sensation rather than perception, the dress ceases to function as a symbol and becomes an experience, allowing identity to emerge not as something seen, but as something lived.

Floating eyes recur throughout the work as manifestations of the gaze: the expectations, judgments, desires, and projections that shape self-perception. Their presence asks what happens to authenticity under observation and how awareness of being watched transforms presence into performance. Through the interplay of dress, reflection, and surveillance, the work explores the distance between the self that is experienced and the self that is displayed, proposing that embodiment begins where the pursuit of an image ends.
